Trash and Recycling Disposal
Proper trash and recycling disposal is very important in The Villages. When things are not properly disposed of, it creates problems for both residents and staff. When non-approved items are left in the garbage enclosures, it causes neighbors the inconvenience of having to navigate around those items in order to place their trash and recycling in the proper containers. The landscape crew is then called to pick up and dispose of those non-approved items thereby taking them away from the normal landscape maintenance and creating extra costs to the district.
- Garbage enclosures contain a garbage dumpster and either 2-3 plastic mixed recycling carts or a mixed recycling dumpster
- Garbage enclosure facilities are reserved for the exclusive use of residents within the districts in which the facilities are located
- Recycling containers (both carts and dumpsters) are to be used for all recyclable materials (see information regarding aluminum cans below) including newspapers, paper products, glass jars and bottles, plastic bottles and containers, scrap metals, plastic bags, polystyrene (foam) and textiles. There is no need to separate recyclable materials; however these items should be rinsed if necessary so they do not contain large food particles
**IMPORTANT NOTE**
The Villages High Twelve Club have receptacles in all garbage enclosures throughout The Villages for the collection of aluminum cans. The can receptacles are labeled “Aluminum Cans for High Twelve” and a volunteer from this club will collect the cans from the enclosures for redemption. A significant portion the money collected is returned to The Villages Community through various projects throughout the year.**
- All garbage material must be placed in the garbage dumpster. Garbage must not be placed in any recycling receptacle. Recycling receptacles that contain garbage or non-recyclable items is contaminated and may not be picked up by the collection company
- Corrugated cardboard must be flattened and placed neatly next to the recycling receptacles for pick up, or brought up to the Corporation Yard during normal business hours for proper disposal.
- Hazardous waste such as paint, motor oil, car and household batteries, fluorescent lights or medical waste (syringes) must be taken to a city sponsored pick up site. For more information and locations for hazardous waste disposal please call the City of San Jose at 299-7300. The City disposal is quite easy, once you have called to find the location, simply place the hazardous waste items in the trunk of your car and drive to that location. When you arrive at this location, you will be asked to remain in your car while City workers unload the items from your trunk. *FLUORESCENT LIGHT BULBS CAN BE DROPPED OFF AT THE CUSTOMER SERVICE DESK OF ANY ORCHARD SUPPLY HARDWARE STORE.
- Non-hazardous waste items or quantities that cannot be placed in the recycling or garbage containers may be disposed of at the Corporation Yard during normal office hours for a billable charge of $25 per cubic yard, (see customer service for a disposal permit). Contractor debris must be disposed of outside The Villages.
- Household appliances can be picked up for a small fee by calling Jaco Environmental at 1-800-741-0172. Jaco does not take televisions.
- Televisions, computer systems, VCR’s, DVD’s, stereos, telephones, etc. can be recycled. Many volunteer groups within the area offer drop off services from time to time, however they can also be taken to Sims Metal on
Monterey Road – 494-4300.
- Large items such as mattresses, large appliances, cabinets, televisions, furniture, etc. may not be placed in the garbage enclosure or dumped at the Corporation Yard. These items require either a bulk item pick up by the garbage company, disposal via the above mentioned services or at your local landfill site. For information on bulk item pick up call Maintenance Customer Service at 223-4670.
The Villages strongly encourages all residents to help save our planet by recycling all recyclable items and keeping hazardous waste out of our landfills.
